Seamless Parking Modernization for Central Europe's Busiest Czech Airport

Prague Airport is one of Central Europe's leading aviation hubs, serving millions of passengers every year. When the airport set out to modernize its aging parking infrastructure, the challenge was clear: deliver a flexible, future-proof system that could integrate with the airport's complex IT landscape — including SAP, Active Directory, and dual data centers — while going live before the peak summer season. Working with SKIDATA implementation partner SayTech, Prague Airport launched a hybrid cloud-and-on-site parking platform that eliminated legacy pain points, unlocked new revenue streams, and set the foundation for a 10-year technology partnership.

Prague Airport's previous parking system relied on magnetic tickets — a legacy technology that generated between 15 and 20 passenger complaints per hour due to ticket jams, read errors, and queuing delays.

With millions of travelers passing through every year and parking serving as their very first airport touchpoint, the operational friction was impacting not just convenience but the airport's overall brand perception.

A complete system overhaul was needed — one that could be delivered and stabilized before the busy summer travel season.

SayTech implemented a SKIDATA parking platform operating in hybrid mode: data stored in the cloud with simultaneous backup on the airport's on-site servers across two independent data centers.

The switch from magnetic tickets to barcode technology eliminated the previous complaint volume almost entirely.

License plate recognition (LPR) runs alongside the barcode system as the primary identifier for calculating taxi tariffs and managing frequent visitors who enter the airport multiple times a day.

SKIDATA Connect acts as the central integration layer, linking the parking platform to SAP for accounting and audit workflows, a central data warehouse for parking analytics, the ADAVAM reservation system for pre-booked parking, and modern payment channels including QR codes and mobile apps.

A standout feature is the ability for travelers to purchase FastTrack and priority boarding services directly at parking payment machines — turning a simple parking transaction into a revenue-generating retail moment.

The project demanded exceptional speed and adaptability. Contracted on November 1, 2023, the system had to be operational by May 1, 2024 — and SayTech delivered the first phase a month early.

Challenges included undocumented legacy electrical infrastructure requiring on-the-fly replacements, and a mid-project introduction of a new Czech license plate format that forced a complete re-engineering of the LPR engine within just three weeks.

The result: a parking operation that now runs with near-zero complaints, delivers measurable revenue uplift during peak tourist season, and is backed by a 10-year contract for ongoing maintenance and expansion — including planned new parking garages with full LPR-based access.

Throughout the entire process, we tried to work as quickly as possible and solve problems promptly, thanks to which we met all deadlines without disrupting the airport's operations.
