IKUNA Naturresort

A Theme Park Entrance That Runs Without Staff. And a Webshop IKUNA Manages Itself.

IKUNA Naturresort in Natternbach, Upper Austria, is a 20-hectare leisure park with more than 100 adventure stations, an adventure pool, its own circus, a 1,000 square metre indoor playground and four-star tipi suites. Up to 200,000 guests come every year, up to 3,500 on a single day. With the new park entrance, the resort runs its gates without an attendant and its online shop without an agency.

Project Overview

Exact visitor numbers

in real time. Every admission is counted, every ticket is checked.

No staff at the gate

The entrance runs on its own and stops anyone without a valid ticket.

Webshop in-house

New tickets go live in the online shop without an agency or external developers.

The problem every park operator knows

The old entrance had tripod turnstiles. Children slipped underneath, climbed over the top or simply walked past. So IKUNA never really knew how many people were inside, let alone whether everyone had a ticket. For an operator with up to 3,500 guests a day, that is a problem for safety as much as for revenue.

The new park entrance was the chance to fix this for good. The team wrote down what the entrance had to deliver: exact visitor numbers, no manual intervention, no gate attendant, and a design that fits a resort where design is part of the product. Then they looked for a partner who could deliver all of it, gate and access system included.

"It quickly became clear that we wanted to move away from a classic turnstile. We wanted a solution that requires as little manual intervention as possible. No one should have to stand next to it; instead, it should operate autonomously while preventing unauthorised access. And this solution does that very well."

Four requirements, one partner

IKUNA chose SKIDATA Door.Gate Expression, a speed gate that combines ASSA ABLOY entrance hardware with the SKIDATA access control system. It is built for entrances where design matters as much as security, from leisure parks and museums to office lobbies and VIP areas. IKUNA installed it twice: at the new main entrance and at the adventure pool, which mainly serves hotel and camping guests. How it answers the requirements:

  • Design. The resort places a very high value on design. The gate was the first thing the team noticed: architecture rather than a barrier.

  • Individual passage control. The gate sends a signal whenever two or three people try to pass through together, or someone walks the wrong way. Every admission is counted, every ticket is checked.
  • No staff at the gate. Day guests scan a QR code, hotel guests use their RFID card, staff open the whole 20-hectare resort with a single chip. The cashier at reception only looks up when the gate beeps.

  • Everything from a single source. Gate, access control system, online shop, skiosk, VIP parking and all interfaces come from SKIDATA. One contact instead of ten, and the coordination between ASSA ABLOY and SKIDATA happens in-house, not at IKUNA.

The part that changes daily operations

The gate is what guests see. What changed the most for IKUNA is the online shop behind it. Before, every new ticket in the webshop meant briefing an agency and waiting for developers. Since SKIDATA took over the webshop in October 2024, the team adds it itself, or has its partner do it.

Ticket sales work the same way for every guest: buy online or at the SKIDATA skiosk, then scan at the gate. Guests with a VIP parking ticket start in a SKIDATA-gated car park right next to the entrance. Up to 3,500 daily admissions in the outdoor park and up to 350 in Kids World now run through the system, giving the resort reliable, real-time numbers for the first time.

As the first pilot operation for Door.Gate Expression, IKUNA also has a say in where the product goes next. The next step is already live: tickets in the phone wallet, scanned at the gate without opening anything. The first guests are entering this way.

"When it comes to the basic functionality, for example adding a ticket to the online shop, I no longer need three web developers or another external company. By now, we can handle all of that in-house, or have it handled by a partner. That's why I definitely see it as a complete solution."

We need to know where our guests come from and where they want to go, and we need to keep these visitor flows in mind at all times. That's also why we decided to use this system with ASSA ABLOY and SKIDATA, because we believe it gives us the best support and the right solution for the future, allowing the system to support all of our future developments.
