Salzburg, September 8th, 2020: Winter times in a ski resort without the slopes in operation? This is difficult to imagine but could be a threat if COVID-19 infection rates increase again in fall.
Franz Hörl, chairman of the Austrian Slope Association, takes the situation seriously, "COVID-19 testing is mandatory in hotels and guesthouses and is paid for by the government. In the case of the slopes and skiing access staff, the responsible persons did not see this necessity. But the absolute trust of the guests in healthy staff on the slopes is indispensable for a successful winter season in Austria. And the employees of the slopes also have contact to customers. We absolutely had to find a solution that was affordable for the operators and owners and still ensures complete testing."
So he turned to two highly innovative companies that could execute this plan: Novogenia from Eugendorf near Salzburg is a high-capacity test laboratory in Austria, system-certified by Quality Austria as a BSL-2 laboratory (Biosafety Level 2 for virus analysis) and is the official test laboratory for the Austrian Army and some federal states. And SKIDATA, the technology company from Groedig near Salzburg with many years of expertise in the field of digital access solutions. More than 10,000 SKIDATA installations worldwide in ski resorts, stadiums, airports, shopping malls, cities, spa & wellness facilities, trade fairs and amusement parks provide secure and reliable access and entry control for people and vehicles.
Together, the two partners have developed a two-phase plan:
For summer operations, Novogenia trusts on accompanying tests, i.e. continuous screening of the slopes’ staff.
In winter, with far higher numbers of guests and a high-capacity operation of the slopes, precautionary measures will be taken as early as autumn: already before the season, a PCR analysis is carried out for all employees, and all employees are provided with a sufficient number of test sets. To ensure that the analysis results can be reliably assigned, SKIDATA's Keycard is used as a fraud-proof and personalized database. All employees possess a numbered employee card which grants access to the facilities and serves for personal registration. The filled test set in turn has an integrated chip for identification, which is read and registered in the screening device.
For the 20/21 season, the Zillertal Arena is already on board, where those responsible have opted for a time-saving solution for staff: a large number of screening devices are distributed throughout the destination. The devices are emptied twice a day and the samples are analyzed at Novogenia in Eugendorf within 12 hours. The sender is informed of the result by e-mail or SMS. If a COVID-19 case is suspected, an acute measure can thus be initiated immediately – a shutdown of operations can be avoided.
Consistent testing of all employees in short intervals is guaranteed - even on weekends and holidays, no exceptions are to be made. At the Gerlos ski resort in Austria, testing has been going on since the start of operations. SKIDATA is in concrete discussions with further leading mountain sports regions.
Franz Hörl is satisfied, "thanks to the optimal cooperation between Novogenia and SKIDATA, I am sure we will achieve the goal of a safe and healthy winter season for guests and employees alike."
