Managing Mobility for 15 Million Annual Visitors
Florence welcomes over 15 million tourists annually to its UNESCO-listed historic center — a center largely closed to private vehicles. Fipark's mission is to intercept traffic before it reaches the Limited Traffic Zone, providing seamless access to the city's vital hubs while keeping cars out of the medieval streets.
The challenge: upgrade an aging infrastructure across 15 diverse facilities — underground garages, surface lots, residential parking, and park-and-ride hubs — into a unified smart mobility network.
Each location serves a different urban function:
• Stazione S.M. Novella — Main railway station, gateway for tourists and commuters
• Careggi CTO / Meyer — Florence's major hospital complex
• Parterre — Northern access point for traffic from Bologna and Mugello
• San Lorenzo - Mercato — The historic central market district
• Beccaria / Alberti — Inner ring serving residential and commercial areas
• Palazzo di Giustizia — The city's judicial and administrative center
Ticketless Entry, Integrated Charging, Zero Emissions
SKIDATA's 2025 upgrade transformed Fipark into a fully digital operation. Cameras at all 59 entry and exit points enable automatic license plate recognition — drivers enter and exit without tickets, with automatic billing through Telepass, UnipolMove, or the Bmove app.
For visitors, 43 contactless payment stations offer Card-out transactions at exit. Real-time variable message signs throughout Florence display available spaces, while the Fipark app provides live availability information.
The installation includes 36 EV charging stations integrated directly with the parking payment system. Fipark operates on 100% renewable energy, and energy monitoring software delivered a 5.4% reduction in consumption in 2024. Corporate headquarters achieved Class A3 energy efficiency rating. Fipark holds SA8000 certification for labor ethics and community responsibility.
Proof of Capability: Official City Infrastructure
This is not a private client installation. Fipark is majority-owned by the Municipality of Florence — this is official city infrastructure, entrusted to SKIDATA.
The centralized management platform connects all 15 facilities to a 24/7 Operations Center with state-of-the-art video surveillance. The 59 vehicle barriers and 35 pedestrian access points operate under unified control. In 2024, Fipark generated €14.78 million in revenue, proving the commercial viability of smart urban parking.
For SKIDATA, Firenze Parcheggi demonstrates the ability to deliver city-scale mobility infrastructure — not a single building, but an entire urban network serving one of the world's most visited and most protected cities.
